Recently had the opportunity to take part in a 3 day Introduction to Blacksmithing at Wasatch Forge, located here in Salt Lake City. The Boy and I both met up with Matt, our friendly giant of a blacksmith instructor to go over the basics of hammer and forge.

We learned (in no certain order):

  • Basic metallurgy
  • Tapering
  • Drawing out the metal
  • Hammer & tong control
  • Beveling
  • The various uses for the different part of the anvil and the different faces of the hammer
  • Heat treating & normalizing
  • Grinding
  • Drifting holes
  • A bunch of stuff I didn’t write down.

Here are a few examples of the work I did those 3 days. I’ll see if I can get The Boy to post his on FB to transfer over here.
